Tis the season where the menswear fashion weeks wrap up, and every single blogger gives you their two cents about what we all just saw. Why does my opinion count over any one elses? Well I haven't decided that yet... but here's what I think. Now listen.
The Jil Sander show gave us some serious leather, and I mean serious seriously. Who doesn't love a patent leather long sleeve? This show single-handedly shot "all leather everything" to the top of my list of looks I want to create/DIY. Lord knows everyone and their grandmother is going to DIY the leather lunchbag from this show but it won't be me. I'll leave that one for someone else to butcher.

A DIY I might try is this metallic sweatshirt from the Neil Barrett show. Simple enough, but a great laying piece. Into it.

I know, I know. Nicola is ruining the Mugler name, blah blah blah. A step back from some of the ridiculous pieces in the show and I can honestly say I really like some of the silhouettes. Whatever. I don't have to justify myself to you, leave me alone!!

I've been super into kilts/skirts lately, and I was just waiiiiting for the Comme Des Garcons show, because I knew I could rely on the line for some skirts. Just knew it. Not feeling the Kristen Stewert hair, but I'll let that one pass.

When looking at a show like Walter Van Beirendonck, you really need to take the show at face value. It will usually be ridiculous, it will usually be unwearable, but you need to find the pieces that can/would work. The monochromatic looks were the strong point of the show, and the multicolored layering was pretty genius. I'm a fan.

I'm not going to pretend that the Raf Simons show was their best because, I mean... it wasn't. But daaaamn, I always love it. I can always point out about half of the line that I would kill to wear. The stand outs for me were the mesh-like sweaters layered over a white shirt & black tie. Simple but awesome.

Alright. Person at Ann Demeulemeester who is lurking my DIYs and passing them along, make yourself known. Okay, obviously I know there isn't anyone over at the Ann team reading my little ol' blog, but damn this is a coincidence. Those of you ~long time readers~ may remember my DIY from April 2010 where I made these exact jeans. Haven't worn them much lately but maybe it's time to whip them out again!

T-shirts over jackets? Shorts over pants? T-shirts over sweaters over dress shirts?! Cardigans over suit jackets? The Acne show was nearly too good to be true. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to layer! Now where does one find a thick t-shirt like that... Hmmmm....

How did I nearly forget Juun.J?!!! Arguably my favorite line evvvver, I always look forward to this show. I think shoulders are the biggest trend to follow this season and Juun.J delivered simply the best in exaggerated. Love it.

Hat - SSUR / Sweater - Thrifted / Necklace - ThriftedI know what you're thinking. I haven't blogged in forever. Well Comme Des Fuck Down, alright?! Here I am!! I've had a super crazy holiday season with all the visits from out of town friends and family events. What ever happened to the good old days of being in elementary school with no job and no commitment? When you could actually enjoy the break. I don't want to complain though because the past little while has been crazy - but also crazy good!I've done some major online shopping and this hat is probably the most amazing thing I've found. Images of it have been floating around all over the internet (mainly tumblr) and I knew I had to somehow get my hands on it. Every lead I seemed to find to this sold out hat ended in a dead end until I happened upon the original online shop page for it. In big red letters it read "SOLD OUT" but, for whatever reason, the order form was still usable. I tried my luck, sent in an order, waited a week and a half, then got a conformation that it was sent out. How lucky am I?!! What the hell!!!!!!
So, the moral of the story is - online shopping rules and continues to be the best invention ever.

A quick look at a few outfits I've thrown together lately. I've found I've been rushing around for the past two weeks. Pulling out my camera on the way out of the house is about as good as my blogging gets nowadays. I'm hoping in the next few weeks I can find some time to do a bit of thrifting and DIYing. It just doesn't feel right not having any new clothes or projects to work on.

I'd also like to mention that I got a chance to see Austra last week. Hoooooooly shit. They're actually incredible live. I find I don't go to many concerts anymore, and the ones I do go to I'm not really blown away. I thought I was over the idea of concerts but this changed my mind. If you get a chance to see them it's highly, highly recommended.

Kilts n' Stuff

I know, I know. It's the classic blogger post. Every few months there is the obligatory "Sorry I haven't been posting" post. So, here it is. My "Sorry I haven't been posting" post. The post is usually filled with multiple excuses, so here they are. The last few weeks have been tough for me. I was unemployed for the summer which some of extended itself into the fall season. My money eventually drained and I had to do the inevitable: Job hunt. I knew I wanted to find something that was at least a wee bit creative, but my search wasn't going so well for the first little while. After a few weeks my angel of a friend referred me to work reception with her at a beautiful hair salon in the city. It's actually a dream job for anyone who has been forced to wear a uniform in a past job. I have complete outfit freedom for the first time ever and it is so liberating! YESSSSSSSS! So that's what I've been up to for the past few weeks. The silver lining in this unplanned hiatus from my blog? I've now get to work at a job where encouraged to dress as crazy as I want every day. Hopefully that means more fun outfits and posts on my blog! Horray!

The kilt is such a fluke. I went to a thrift store looking for one and actually found it. If any of you are thrifters you know that the number one rule of thrift shopping is to not go looking for anything specific. It never works out in your favor. The thrifting Gods must had been with my that day because I found this amaaaaazing black kilt. It needed a bit of an alteration but it was super easy to do. Hallelujah!

FHM Collections + Feature

The people over at FHM were nice enough to do a little feature on me! (more on that later) If that wasn't enough they offered to send over a copy of their current issue, which happened to come with a bonus style supplement called FHM Collections. I'm not going to lie, FHM isn't normally a magazine I would associate with fashion but I figured I'd hold my judgments until I received the magazine.

I've got to tell you.. I was pleasantly surprised. This FHM Collections really holds its own. It's got a wide variety of styles for all different types of guys. It's really comparable some of the other competing menswear magazines out there. The articles are interesting but accessible and relatable. The editorials are the same; nothing too extreme but just.. guys wearing nice things. Things that I'd like to wear. I can appreciate that.

Arguably the coolest part about FHM Collections is that it claims to be the first completely interactive magazine. No, that doesn't mean there are QVC codes on every page. You simply download an app for your smart phone which recognizes the images in the magazine, opening up a web page with more information on the subject. Like the article about fix gear bikes? Scan the photo and go straight to their website with more info on fixies. See a contest you want to enter? Scan the image and it'll bring you straight to the entry page. It really is one of the smartest uses of technology I've seen in a magazine....ever.

Now for the feature! On FHM's website they did a roundup of their favorite menswear bloggers in what they called the FHM Ultimate Style Guide. I'm honored to be on the top of the list with some other really great names. I encourage you to check out the feature (by clicking the image above) and take a look at the other bloggers. It's an interesting group of some blogs I hadn't seen before but will definitely be checking out again in the future.

Clark & Hout - Pass It On

Raez of Cheap Thrills
Local design firm Clark + Huot held an event that is very new for us in Winnipeg: A networking party. It was really a first for a lot of us but it was a really valuable experience. I've always thought that Winnipeg was home to a ton of extremely creative people, and what a great idea to put them all in a room together to simply talk. I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to use up some of my Polaroid film. Here are some photos of my good friends as well as some amazing people I met that evening!

Thanks again to Clark + Huot for the great event. Make sure to check out their blog for some more photos from the party, including my painfully awkward "red carpet" shot. That's something that definitely takes some getting used to!

The Perfect Wide Brim Hat + Cards

I have shared a few of these images on my blog before, but the search is still on. I've been looking for the perfect wide brim hat for ages. With the seasons changing and the layers piling on, now seems like the perfect time to have one. I've been holding my breath hoping I'll be able to find one thrifting but it's starting to seem like my luck won't be great. If anyone has seen any good, relatively priced ones online... LET ME KNOW!! In the meantime I'll just have to watch this video on repeat and pretend I'm decked out head-to-toe in Dior Homme. Livin' the dream, literally.

While I'm at it I wanted to share my latest little DIY project. For the last while my blog has been coming up in conversation and it was always such a hassle trying to direct people to my website. I can tell them the name over and over but the likelihood of them remembering seemed small. I figured the best way to let people know was to make myself some business cards. Obviously, knowing me, I couldn't just take the easy way out and order regular business cards. No, I had to do something at least a little bit creative with it. So, I went onto Simon Stamp and ordered myself two stamps: One of the tooth logo I've been using on my blog, and the other of my contact information. The stamps arrived and they are perfect! I love the idea of being able to mix up the stamp color for the tooth logo on the back. For the first batch I opted for a red tooth with simple black font. The stamps are quite relively priced especially considering I can now make an infinite amount of cards. So...what do you think!?

As promised, I dug up my old Polaroid camera and started shooting with it again. The film seems to be a bit expired, but that results in the great sepia tones I got in these photos. Not so bad! It's kind of a pain to lug around a big Polaroid camera but I'll try my best to bring it out with me as much as possible!
As for the tunes, how strange that two girls with super similar names (Azalea/Azelia) release dirty, vulgar, badass songs at around the same time? Anyone who knows me will tell you how much of my heart is dedicated solely to female rappers, so these choices probably won't seem too far too. These are easily two of my end-of-summer jams.

DIY - Jil Sander Inspired Pleather Bag

My friend Nick recently posted a DIY of the Jil Sander market bag on his blog (The Elixe) and I knew I needed to have one. At first I started begging him to make me one and send it to me, but I figured I should stop being so lazy and just attempt it myself. I was lucky enough to find this amazing tan material in the odds-and-ends bin at my local fabric store. It was a steal at only $5, and it was more than I needed to complete the project. I'm not going to post step-by-step instructions, simply because it really isn't my DIY to take credit for. If you'd really like to try this out go harass Nick on his blog for his instructions. They really were helpful. :P

Desperately want to get back into my Polaroid photo groove after seeing this Fujifilm instant shot taken by my friend Bryn. With digital photography I find it's hard to truly capture a moment. I know better than anybody as a blogger, sorting through hundreds of photos just to find the select few you deem worthy of posting. So I think it's about time I dust off the old Polaroid camera, dig up the rolls of film I have sitting around (I know... I actually have film?! I seem crazy for not using it), and shoot away! Youth Of The Woods

I thought I'd share one of my all time favorite fashion videos with you guys. I saw this mooooonths ago for the first time and watched it at least once daily for a few weeks. Eventually I forgot about it but it recently came to my attention again and I'm back in the same cycle. I think it's so, so beautiful. I usually lose interest quite quickly with fashion videos but this somehow gets me evvveryyyy time. It's shot in Montreal with perhaps a few familiar faces (hello ssense models & my girl Chloe Wise of Naughty Mess Vintage). Give it a watch and let me know what you think!

Also I should mention I mindlessly gave my camera to a friend traveling to Iceland for a week. I didn't really think about how it would effect my blogging until now, but I figure I might as well make the best of this situation and share things that inspire me! Plus I've got a thing or two that I photographed earlier this week, so I'm not completely S.O.L. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

DIY: Lace Front Sweatshirt

I've been trying to stay away from designer inspired DIY projects, but when I saw THIS PHOTO from the Givenchy S/S 2011 show I knew I had to try something similar out. As usual, I tried to take a but of my own spin on it. I decided on a white sweatshirt and a slightly cream colored lace just to get a little more contrast. I'm quite happy with how it turned out, too. Want to try it out for yourself? Here's how I did it!

What you'll need:

White sweatshirt
Lace
Sharp scissors
Smaller scissors
Pins
Marking tool (didn't really use it much to be honest)

Lay your lace over the sweatshirt making sure the pattern lines up in the center of the sweater.

Pin all along the side seam, armhole, shoulder seam and neckline. Make sure the pins are lined up with the seams to allow for cutting in the next step.

Cut access lace away. Make sure you leave enough allowance around all edges. You will be trimming the extra allowance near the end after sewing, so don't worry about making these cuts perfect. At this step I also took out my pins and repined everything, making sure that I only had the top layer of the sweater attached.

You'll now start sewing. I found it easier to only sew in one straight line at a time. Start with the neckline only, then do each shoulder seam separately. Then continue on both armholes and finish off with side seams. Follow the seams of the original sweatshirt as closely as possible.

Once you've completed all the seams you'll be ready to cut off the excess lace.

Cut as closely to the sewing line as possible. I cut it all with my larger scissors, then went through again with my smaller scissors to get any little pieces I may have missed.

Now you're ready to cut the bottom. Find the most appropriate length where the pattern continues across the whole garment. All lace is different so it will really depend on the lace you buy.

This is where your little scissors will really come in handy. Don't worry about being perfect, either. I found it looked best when there were little parts of the lace left here and there, as long as you are following the original pattern.

Continue all the way to where your side seams end. Don't worry too too much about following the pattern near the end, just make sure you cut to your seam.

There you have it! This was a relatively easy and quick DIY project. I'd really love to try this again with black lace. Let me know if you try it out!

Can't get over everything in this post. Lets break this down.

How gooooood is my Eleven Objects collar?! It's impeccably made with smooth leather and even a gold stud closure. (you know I love a good stud) Thanks again to the girls over there for sending me this, it truly is incredible.
What is this lace shirt? I found it in the ladies section in a thrift store but the cut/sleeves just scream menswear. I didn't know how I was going to style it but I think it'll come in more handy than I expected.
Since when did Forever 21 Mens have good accessories?! I thought it was worth a look last time I was walking by the store and I couldn't believe it... This is a perfect faux leather portfolio bag. Not complaining at the price tag, either ($19!!)

Festival Florals

Over the weekend I was visiting Montreal for Osheaga Music Festival. I always love going to weekend festivals out of town and the outfits that I get to plan around them. But I'm usually so busy I forget to document all of my outfits. Luckily, while in Montreal I got to meet one of my blogger BFFs Nick of The Elixe who thankfully brought his camera everywhere. The festival itself was incredible. I'd really recommend it to anyone looking to travel for a festival next summer. It's large enough that they get really great artists, but still small enough that you get to actually see the artists. Some highlights for me were Baths, Crystal Castles, Braids, RATATAT, Suuns, The Flaming Lips and Jamie XX, among many others. I'm back home in Winnipeg now so I'm sure my posts will start to pop up more frequently! Enjoy the rest of your week everyone :)

A friend texted me this morning reminding me that I hadn't blogged since June. What the hell happened to me?! I've had a crazzzzy month with the Winnipeg Folk Festival, a bunch of concerts, my 21st birthday, visits from friends from out of town, and a million other things. I've been having a ton of fun but just haven't seem to have time to post. But, enough excuses.

Sweater - H&M Fashion Against Aids / Cuffs - Etsy
Juun.J never fails to be one of my favorite collections season after season. The S/S 2010 show was where I first fell in love with the idea of the suit jumpsuit I shared with you a few posts ago. This season was no different. The main thing I was lusting over from this collection, however, was the gold cuffs. A little easier to emulate than the suit jumpsuit, I might add. So naturally I took to Etsy to see what I could find. The shop I came accross was called Bare Naked Findings and they have quite a few different styles/shapes of cuffs to choose from. I just got them in today and I couldn't be happier. They are well made but still flexible enough to fit my wrists.

I've got a few more things I'm really excited to share with you guys in the coming days. It's been unbelievably hot in Winnipeg recently. Tough to be creative with your wardrobe when it feels like +42°C (+107°F). Hopefully it cools down just a wee bit in the next few days so I can have fun with my clothes again.

DIY: Temporary Hair Dye

About a million years ago (ok, just over a year ago) I made a blog post about wanting to bleach my hair and then dye it crazy colors. I had long forgotten about that dream until I was sitting in the salon chair and my good friend Chelsea suggested "Why don't you have your hair a different color every day you're in Toronto!?"

I loved the idea but questioned how we could do it. She suggested using washable markers. I was a little apprehensive at first but thought it was worth a shot. She gave me a few tips on how to do it and man, was she right. It's apparently not an unheard of process, but I couldn't seem to find any helpful videos online. I decided to set up my camera and record a little video showing how I do it myself. Also I should mention that I used Crayola Tropical washable markers. This 8 pack has a really nice assortment of pastel colors.

I worried the first time I did it about how temporary it was actually going to be. Like I mentioned in the video, as long as you don't add water you shouldn't have any trouble. Here's a few cellphone photos of other colors I did!

Lavender & Turquoise

So many fashion editorials and even shows are featuring colored hair lately but it's such an extreme thing to commit to. That's why I love this process, simply because of how temporary it is. I know for myself, picking just one color would be an impossibly hard decision. So, if you're blonde like me and want to experiment with hair color, try this out! I really like the look of it just being random highlights here and there, but obviously you can do as much or as little as you like.

Here's a quick outfit from the other day. I picked this shirt up at Zara on my Toronto trip, I absolutely love it. A few posts back I mentioned I was trying to stay away from black for the summer, and I'm proud to say it's been going well! I bought these white jeans a while ago and couldn't figure out how to style them but I think rolling the cuffs really helps.

DIY: Don't Try This At Home, Kids

Alright. A bit of a followup on my last post. Unfortunately I didn't win the H&M Fashion Blogger contest, but if you follow me on my twitter you probably noticed I was still lucky enough to go to the Much Music Video Awards. I wasn't covering it for H&M, I just went to watch the show and it was awweeeeesoommmeeeeeee. Which brings me to this post.

I've been working on this DIY project for literally months. You'll notice I'm not including step by step instructions for this project. There's one huge reason why; I had no damn idea what I was doing. Not a clue. I've loved the idea of a suit jumpsuit for a while and I figured I'd just have to make my own. I picked this suit up at Goodwill for $8 and went to town. I honestly wouldn't even know how to explain how I did this, so I won't even try.

(Sorry, excuse the un-pressed hem on the shorts)

As I was making this, I always wondered when and where I could actually wear this. As the MMVAs approached I realize this would be the perfect outfit, so I frantically worked to get this together. With a little help from Kylie (of Nice and Shiny) after my sewing machine broke, I was able to do it!

Sorry about my lack of posts in the last week. I'll get into more details later, but some pretty exciting stuff has been happening. I quit my job which was impossibly difficult, but I've got a really exciting summer lined up. But like I said, you'll hear more about that later. First things first; MY HAIR. Such a drastic change! One interesting thing with being good friends with your hairdresser is they can convince you to do crazy things. In my hair post a few months ago I spoke very poorly of the last time I went blonde, but I figured it was worth another shot. Luckily Chelsea, my hairstylist, knew exactly what she was doing. The process took fooourrr hours, but it turned out exactly how I wanted it. I thought people were lying when they said bleaching your hair was painful but lord have mercy I know I'll never say that again. Suffer for fashion though, right?

Secondly, how incredible is this shirt? Unconditional has been on the top of my "wish I could own more of" list for a while now. Not too long ago I scored some Unconditional drop crotch shorts on ebay, but this top takes the cake. Maaaaan, I looove this. There is nothing like the feeling of a well draped t-shirt. Plus the fabric weight is perfect for summer.

Anyone who follows my blog know there are two things I live for: Sunglasses and Boy London (Okay, maybe three things... Jeremy Scott too). I nearly fell over in my chair when I came across these dead stock vintage sunglasses on ebay. Seriously, I went into panic mode. Luckily they were 'buy it now' so I didn't have to stress for days about whether or not I was going to get them. These are almost too perfect though. Metal frames, classic eagle logo, shattered effect? I can't even process these. And the best part? I had this photo saved in my inspiration folder for months. Who would've thought I'd one day get my hands on a pair?! Certainly not me!
So. Let this be a lesson to all of you. Checking your favorite ebay searches religiously actually can pay off. Persistence, people!!

We are having the worst weather in Winnipeg. I can't believe it's May and I'm still needing to wear 3 layers. I think it actually even snowed for a minute or two yesterday. The lovely people at Jeffrey Campbell contacted me a while ago about a new line of mens shoes they were working on. When they showed me the Areas (photographed above) I fell in love. The little extra height with the heel is subtle but really made me feel taller. I felt like I was towering over every person I saw yesterday. The leather is slightly distressed and worked in, giving them a really vintage feel. I'm just excited I can finally own a pair of JCs since all my girlfriends seem to live in theirs. Has anyone seen my blogging mojo? I seem to have misplaced it... The timing of this this particular post is surprising considering the downward spiral I've been in since the Canadian Election last night. Oh brother! What a let down. Having said that, today has been miserable. Not even the nice weather we're having can get me out of my rut. So, in an attempt to try to cheer myself up I dressed in some of my favorite threads and even threw on some neon. If a bright neon belt won't cheer me up, I'm not sure what accessory could.

I think I've found a new style icon. When I first saved this photo it was mainly a joke, but he's been sitting on my desktop for weeks. Sorry, sorry, sorrrrrrry! I was on a blogging role for a while, but I'm not sure what happened since I got back from my trip. Got a little lazy, I suppose. But I'm alive! Here I am!!

I've been searching for the perfect black hat for a while now. I knew by summer I needed to find one but had no idea where to start looking. Alas, leave it to Jeremy Scott to have some cosmic connection to my fashion woes.

Here's Kanye West at the Fall Winter 2011 Jeremy Scott show. I saw this hat and was obsessed, but had no idea where I'd be able to find it. Next in line of the cosmic connection was through the blogger world. There was a post on Is Mental pointing me in the right direction. But I figured that was the end of my black-hat-lucky-streak, because the hat was sold out. I kept checking back every week, hoping that it would come back in stock. I had to, right?! Well waiting paid off because it finally came back in stock!!

K, JUST SAYIN, but I think my bff Freya and I have a bit more #SWAG than Kanye, no? Platforms? Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh.

So let this be a lesson to everyone. The internet is awesome. Bloggers are awesome. Jeremy Scott is awesome. Kayne West is awesome too. Actual Pain is fuuuuckkkking awesome.

DIY Two Toned Shirt / Sandbox Feature

As some of you may remember, a few months ago Raez (of Cheap Thrills) and I were featured in Sandbox Magazine. We wrote an article with tips on how to thrift. They must have liked us, because they asked us back to do another feature. This time: DIYs. They must know me well because I love me a good DIY just as much as a good thrift find. The magazine came out last Friday and I ran out to get myself a copy. Along with our DIY it featured a great editorial styled by the darling Bri Foster as well as a feature with another local blogger, Breanne of Le Flattery. They've really got some great variety in this issue. The magazine is now distributed all the way from Winnipeg to Vancouver and everywhere in between! Check out their website for a complete list of stockists.

For those of you who won't be able to pick up the magazine; don't fret! I decided to post the DIY here, along with photos of every step (gotta help out the visual learners)! It's a really quick and fun DIY project. I hope you guys like it!!

Items you'll need:

Two shirts of your choice. Make sure they are similar in weight/fabric as well as size. Measure the sleeves around the arm hole. You want the sleeves to match up as closely as you can, this will really help when placing the sleeves in.
Sharp scissors
Pins
Sewing machine
Basic/intermediate sewing skills

Start by deciding which shirt you'd like as the sleeves and which you'd like as the body of your shirt.
Once you've chosen, start cutting the shirt that will be used for the sleeves. Cut within 1.5 cm of the armhole seam leaving enough allowance to line up later.

Cut both sleeves. Make sure to make it clear which sleeve is left and which is right. I did so here by marking the right sleeve with a pin.

Now you'll be cutting the sleeves off your body shirt. As you did in on the first shirt, leave 1.5 past the shoulder seam. This time you will be cutting into the sleeve, not the body. You will use the armhole seams later to line them up perfectly.

Start pinning. This step can be the most frustrating, but it really helps if you take time to do it well. Match up your shoulder seams first, followed by the side seam of your shirt to the seam of your sleeve. (Warning: all shirts may be different. Mine happened to fit perfectly, yours may not) The idea here is to distribute any of the extra ease you have in either your sleeve or your shirt. This step is crucial so your shirt won't bunch when sewing.

Once your sleeve is completely pinned you can start sewing. I chose to follow the original seam line with the side of my pressure foot on my sewing machine. This helps to insure you have a straight seam, as well as making sure none of the shirt's original seams are visible when completed. Start sewing at the side seem of the shirt/bottom seam of the sleeve.

Sew in a complete circle until you reach your original starting point. You're done your first sleeve! Repeat for the second sleeve.

Cut excess fabric from inside sleeve to remove bulk. Leave at least 1cm from the seam.

There you have it! Your very own two toned dress shirt!

As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't expecting much shopping during my trip. In Miami, we ended up having a free afternoon and decided to head to an outlet mall. I had a bit of luck and snagged a few great Marc by Marc Jacobs pieces, including this shirt. Saks off 5th always seems to deliver whenever I get a chance to shop at one.

I really only had one shopping mission on this whole trip; find a new wallet. I've had this wallet for a few years now. I originally bought it at a church rummage sale for ten cents... It wasn't in the worst shape but after constant use it was getting worse and worse. So I had my work cut out for me for my one afternoon in Mexico. I needed to find a new wallet! This one cost me a biiit more than my other one (around $6 USD) but worth every penny. ;) I can't wait for it to wear out juust a bit, though.

Every once in a while I go through a bit of a lull music wise. I just get really sick of my music. For whatever reason, right now I'm really digging a lot of new music, and I'm also rediscovering a few of my old favorites. I thought I'd share 10 of my favorite songs of the moment. I'm back from my trip, safe and sound. Being away from the internet for so long was harder than I expected, but here I am! I'm alive! My google reader basically exploded while I was gone. I'm still not even close to caught up. Oh brother, the pains of traveling.

Anyways, the shopping on my trip was what I expected; crappy. I did manage to find a few good things that you'll probably hear about soon, but in the mean time there is something else I am far more excited about. My BOY LONDON SHIRT!!!!!!!!!! Alright. Here's the story. I've been so into everything and anything BL for the past year or so. I've been trolling ebay auctions daily, reaching the depths of google and google image search, and using any other means necessary to try to get my hands on something new or old from the brand. I'm serious guys, this was a serious problem of mine. In one of my late night google scans, I came across a blog post of a London based store called Sick, but realized I probably wouldn't be in London anytime soon so forgot about it. Then, when I heard my good friend Kylie of Nice & Shiny was taking a trip to London, I HAD to ask her to find Sick for me. Well... she found it alright! She was nice enough to bring me back this shirt and I can't even express how excited I am about it. AHHHH!!!!! Finaaaallly! Thanks again Kylie!!! I owe you big time!

I've got my new Jeremy Scott x Longchamp bag all packed up for a family vacation to the Caribbean. Haven't traveled with my family in a few years so I'm not sure what to expect other than some good food, good reads, and lots of sun. Usually I love going on trips just for the shopping, but I'm not sure I'm going to find much other than a few nick-nacks here and there. That's okay though. I'm just really looking forward to some relaxation and to eat, eat, eat!

I also had a big elaborate plan to have scheduled blog posts ready for all next week, but that proved to be impossible with work and packaging and everything else. So, my blog will be M.I.A for a week and a half. I'll hopefully get a few good photos and some neat things to share when I get back.

I've been a fan of Daniel's since the Welcome Hunters days (RIP) and have been eying some of his pieces on Shop Fatal ever since. I love the idea of a line that doesn't have a specific customer or gender. I think the pieces are really interchangeable between men and women but still maintain a really cool, easy silhouette. Not an easy feat! Daniel does it again with the latest collection of unisex looks. I hate that I don't own anything from this or any of the other collections yet, but after trying a few looks on (ha!) I think it's obvious it's a good fit. Looks like it's about time I got myself something!
But in the meantime I think I should turn off my computer before these photos make my head explode. Too weird.

I've never been one to experiment with drugs, so Jeremy Scott's latest collection might be the closest I'll get. He is never one to disappoint on the theatrics and this show was no exception. I died over this purple plastic kilt over white leggings with a chunky knit sweater. Not exactly a usual look for Jeremy (or me, really) but something I'd kill to wear none-the-less.

Quick DIY: Studded Leather Portfolio

My stash of these cone studs seems to be bottomless. I keep dreaming up project after project and I always seem to have leftovers once I'm done. I picked up this leather portfolio at Goodwill for $2 but wasn't quite sold on it. I loved the size and the texture but it needed a little something else. Naturally, I went to my usual go-to: studs.

Studding leather seemed like a daunting and painful ordeal but it went quite smoothly. I would pierce the studs row by row from one end to about halfway, turn the bag inside out, then bend all the clamps down. Less annoying repetitive motions that are usually associated with studding. Quick and easy and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Totally transformed the bag me thinks!!

I've been humming and hawing for months on one of these guys. It's a strange piece to call a "staple" in a wardrobe but after much convincing I decided that it could be considered that in mine. It ended up being a valentines day present to myself as it showed up earlier today. As soon as I realized what was inside the package I ripped it open and started trying it on over nearly everything I own. And let me tell ya, was I ever right about it being a staple! It transforms the simplest outfits into a complete look. I'm worried I'm going to throw it over any/every outfit for the next little while and everyone around me will be so sick of it. Oh well!! While on the subject of Linda Farrow, I thought now might be a good time to introduce another new friend of mine. These Linda Farrow x House of Holland sunglasses. I bought these ones a while ago but haven't really taken them out for a spin yet. Not unlike my Walter Van Beirendonck ones the only reason I could afford these was because I snagged them during a crazy sale. I think the funniest part about these is the text on the inside of the arm reads: "Fashion Accessory Only." Who ever said sunglasses needed to protect your eyes? At least I'll have a story for my unborn children on why I'm blind! For ~fashion~

And while I've got you here, I might as well show you my outfit from today! Winnipeg has been having unbelievable weather for February. Normally we would still be in the deep minuses (-35° anyone?) but we've been getting unusually high temperatures. It is still fluctuating from high to low, but it's nice to have a little variety other than freeze-your-ass-off. This isn't even the first time I got to wear a spring jacket!

Anyways, these bad boys were thrifted at Value Village. I almost left them behind after telling myself that I really didn't need any more pairs. I figured for $3 I might as well and I'm so glad I did. I had never head of the brand but it turns out Serengeti is a pretty big/relatively expensive brand. Glad I changed my mind because I've been wearing them almost every day since.

As you can probably tell from my latest DIY, I'm pretty obsessed with sunglasses. Since most of my sunglasses are second hand or come from a dollar store, I'm not really used to having good quality ones. But I'm learning that sometimes it's nice to shell out the extra bit of money for a pair of sunglasses you really love. My cheap ass hardly ever does it, but when I do it's got to be for something really special. Having said that, check out my brand new Linda Farrow x Walter Van Beirendonck sunglasses!

I can't get over this incredible cream color. Even better... I was lucky enough to snag these for half price on ASOS! The absolute best part about them though?
Interchangeable lenses!! Ahhhhh!!

Here's the second of four lenses it comes with. I feel like these ones kind of give me bitch eyebrowns. I'm kind of into it?! Maybe I'll wear them when I'm in a bad mood.

DIY: Sunglasses Holder

I was so sick of not having a functional storage space for my sunglasses, so I decided to just make my own. Keeping true to the theme of my room I knew I wanted something with a vintage feel. Not exactly sure how this idea came to me but it was a total "A-ha!" moment! If anyone else out there has a strange, sick addiction to sunglasses, this is an awesome way to keep them organized!

What you'll need:
Scissors, Thick elastic band (found at any sewing store), Staple gun, Vintage looking frame of your choice, Tape Measure, Pencil or marker, and lots and lots of sunglasses

Start by removing the staples holding the original artwork in place. Obviously, this step can be skipped if you have an empty frame.

Decide where you want your first row. I chose to do mine quite close to the top. Staple down on one side using as many staples as you need to make it feel secure. I used from 2-3 on each one. Pull the elastic tight across to the other side. You want to do quite tight, but not tight enough that you will be losing the shape of the elastic.

Once your first row is complete, measure down to decide where your next row will be. I decided on 8 inches. Measure down on both sides, and repeat the previous steps to secure another row. Continue down until you reach near the end of your frame.

Find the right wall and make sure it's level. And vola, there you have it. The last step is the most fun: Add your sunglasses!!

DIY: Hat Dyeing

I found this blue hat at a thrift store and fell in love with the shape/fit, but I hated the color. I wasn't sure if dyeing it was a bad idea or not but I figured it was worth a shot. Here's a quick overview of how I did it in case anyone wants to try.

What you'll need: a hat made of natural fibers, Rit fabric dye, rubber gloves, and a bucket large enough to fit the hat comfortably.

My hat was wool felt so I made sure use water that wasn't too warm. I left it completely emerged in the water for about half an hour, making sure that the shape wasn't being compromised.

When you take it out to dry, it's important to make sure it's in the proper shape. It will probably take a long time to dry. I left mine out for about 48 hours making sure it was completely dry.

It turned out this really great gray/purple color. I really, really love it.

I first saw a jacket like this on one of my favorite blogs, Love Aesthetics, and it was love at first sight. I planned on making one for a while, but couldn't find a zipper long enough for the life of me. I finally decided to just cut my loses and do it with the longest zipper I could find. Considering I would probably always wear it this open regardless, I don't hate the way it turned out. It's a really easy DIY if you're comfortable with a sewing machine. It only took be about an hour to do!

These Opening Ceremony shoes are an ebay find. I absolutely love them, but the first time I wore them I made the mistake of not wearing socks. And, obviously, I chose a day where I was out and about from 8:00 and didn't return home until noon the next day. Yikes. They cut up my feet pretty bad but I have since worn them with socks and that really solved the problem.

I honestly believed I didn't change my hair very much, but looking through some of my old photos I realized how drastically my hair changes. I thought it would be be fun to count down 10 of my favorite looks. Plus I desperately need a haircut so this might get my mind off of it for a little while!

#10 - "What am I wearing?"
Apparently I thought this Hot Topic bow tie was a good idea. Not going to lie though, I'm kind of digging this super-short-on-the-sides, long-enough-to-tuck-behind-my-ears-on-the-top kind of look.

#9 "Purple."
Speaking of hot topic, I picked up some purple hair dye there on my last trip to Minneapolis. It didn't stay in very long but I was kind of really into it?

#8 "Purple? Again?"
I bought this strange drug store goop that temporarily turned my all my hair purple. I feel like I liked this look more than I should have...

#7 "Pee"
Um... I think every ~fashin teen~ went through a phase where they thought blonde hair was right for them. Deciding to do it out of the box in my bathroom may have been my mistake, but this piss yellow mop was fun while it lasted.

#6 "No words"
The aftermath of one of my most memorable Halloween costumes ever. (Michael Alig) I deemed myself appropriate enough looking to go out in public looking like this. Say what you will about me, but I commit to a costume.

#5 "Salt n Pepper"
Some of you may remember my post about this do. Still one of my favorites. Can't wait until my golden years...

Nothing beats trying on your best friend's hair extensions! (right Jamie?) This photo along gave me motivation to grow my hair for at least 6 months. So much for that dream.

#3 "Bed Head"
This photo is strangely one of my all time favorites of my hair. Took it on the way out out the house at 6:00 for work. Nothing beats rolling out of bed and having a completely natural quaff!

#2 "THE BUN!!!!!"
Those of you who know me know that I worked on this bad boy for literally months. I kept my hair painfully long just in hopes of one day being able to tie it back in a knot. The most regretful part about it all; once I got it long enough I didn't leave the house wearing it. Not once. Uuuuuuugghhhh. That is the definition of regret.

Now now, I know it's not really in the true Christmas spirit showering myself with gifts, but how could I resist?! I've been eying the Jeremy Scott x Adidas wing shoes ever since the original release but my cheap ass couldn't afford them. How was I expected to say no when they showed up on Luisaviaroma for 50% off?! Impossible. And the t-shirt... Well the shirt showed up in my "Newly listed Jeremy Scott items" email I receive daily. That thing is dangerous too.
Plus, now I have chic gym wear for my cliche "get fit" new years resolution. (I'm looking at you poliopoliopolio & CoaCD)

Newest pick in the Pullteeth book club: Sandbox Magazine! This Winnipeg based magazine launched only a year ago, and it's exploded into a staple for any fashionable local. They have a great eye for local talent and they really showcase a lot of people who wouldn't normally be in the spotlight.
Not to mention the incredible cover styled by my pal Bri Fozter! (remember the infamous hair jacket?)

Look who it is! My two blogger BFFs Kylie of Nice and Shiny and Raez of Cheap Thrills!! This is from the launch issue of the last issue. You can see more photos of the party on Raez's blog (click).

By far my favorite article features Lara Vincent, who is a Toronto based designer with roots in Winnipeg. She designs the most beautiful head wears. I swear, any girls reading this would be crazy not to fall in love her her pieces. I mean... seriously?!. Check out her website http://www.laravincent.com/ for full lookbooks + a few videos.

Well look who it is.... As you can imagine Raez and I jumped at the opportunity to be featured in the magazine. Little did we know they were going to have us do what we love... thrift! I can't think of anything better! We wrote an article on our 10 tips when second hand shopping.

We were especially lucky to have a friend of mine, Kathleen Willson, taking our photos. It was so much fun shooting! Ahh!

For anyone who lives in Winnipeg, Sandbox is available right now at Burns & Black, Hush Clothing, and McNally Robinson. As of Jan 11th it will also be available at Chapters bookstores, not only in Manitoba but in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Toronto!

Husk Magazine is an incredibly smart, beautiful, and innovative magazine. Lord knows I love a good magazine but it's hard to find one that is basically tailor made to my interests. And let me say, this one comes pretty damn close. It's packed with with editorials and interviews featuring Damir Doma, Terence Koh, Maison Martin Margiela, and many more. It features stunning menswear fashion pieces and really great reads. I encourage anyone living in larger fashion cities (Paris, New York) to seek it out. For those of us who don't have such luxury, Husk offers worldwide shipping on their online store. I should also mention that the magazine is printed on great paper. I know it seems like such a small detail but it really adds to the aesthetic of the magazine. I think I'm in love!

Bad Timing

I decided to take a look at Value Village yesterday which happened to be the day after their big 50% off day, but I figured I had nothing to lose. I'm so glad I went because I managed to find four incredible pairs of sunglasses. Most of the tags said they were on the floor for the sale. I still can't comprehend why no one snagged these. Oh well! All the better for me! Perhaps with the coming of winter people wouldn't think to look for sunglasses. You've got to plan ahead, people!!

By far the best find of the day: Vintage Rayban wayfarers in brown. I still can't get over these. I'm so used to seeing bad knock off wayfarers I almost didn't look at these, but I'm so glad I did. Raybans have such a unique shape that is impossible to replicate or duplicate, and this is especially true with vintage pairs. The tag on these said they had been on the floor for over a week. I really don't understand how they weren't snatched up at 50% off day but hey, I'm not complaining!
Now... to plan a sunny vacation to get use out of these...

I had some leftovers from the DIY studded vest I made almost a year ago, so I decided to put them on my vintage military jacket. I almost didn't buy this jacket when I found it at Goodwill for only $6 but decided to buy it just in case. It sat in my basement for months and finally decided to break it out this fall. Winnipeg doesn't usually get much of an autumn so I was thrilled when I got to wear this jacket for longer than just a week. The weather is still pretty good considering it's November, so here's hoping I'll get a few more weeks with this guy... Especially since it's now freshly studded! I'm also thrilled to announce I've really caught onto a quicker technique to studding. This took about the duration of 1 Golden Girls episode and a 1/2 episode of The Nanny.

Halloween is my favorite, favorite, favorite time of year. I was stressed out a little bit this year, because I've normally got my costume idea picked out by mid summer. My pal Freya and I had a complete AH-HA moment with the release of the new Die Antwoord video "Evil Boy" a few weeks ago. We scrambled to get everything we needed for our costumes and worked our little fingers dry but it was totally worth the blood, sweat and tears. I'm so committed to halloween I didn't even mind cutting all my hair off. Yikes! No regrets.

Oh, and you might notice something new hanging from my ear. I figured, if I was going to do Ninja I had to do him right. Soo a few weeks ago I got my ear pierced. I've actually wanted to get it done for a while and I'm glad I finally had an excuse to go and do it.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I'm not sure what's going on with me but I'm really not on my A game with blogging anymore. Anyone who knows me knows that my room is a constant disaster. I finally had enough so I basically gutted my room, got rid of 60% of my clothes, and decided to start (somewhat) fresh. A good friend of mine is helping me build a wall unit, so hopefully organization will be the key to help me keep my room clean. I'm a huge believer in your attitude/feelings reflecting that of the space you live in, and I've been living in a rut for the longest time. I'm really hoping that this can give me a fresh start of sorts, as corny as that sounds.

Having said that, I'm really hoping the organization/refining my wardrobe will not only be a positive thing for my life, but for my blog as well! Blogging has sort of lost the excitement for me, and I hate that is has. I'm not about to make some harsh decision and close my blog, or anything of that nature. The process of my room is still going and hopefully when it's done I'll be re-inspired to share it (among other things) here.

So, there you have it folks. I thought I would try to explain my absence. I really do love blogging and I'm hoping that I can really come back with a bang! I'll see you guys sooner than later!

Halloween happens to be one of my favorite times of year. Not only do you get to dress like a total slut and get away with it, second hand stores start putting out the best/craziest/zaniest/amazingest (lol) items! I'm not exactly sure why a children's bear costume screamed "BUY ME", but I found myself at the cash register buying it. Glad I did, because when I got home the idea struck me. HAIRY ARMS! Now I know this concept isn't a new one to this blog (how weird is that?) but I'm freaking out about this one, guys! I took the cheaters way out and cut the legs off, snipped a slit on the top of each leg, and snapped them onto the shoulder pieces. Voila! I wasn't about to ruin my favorite motorcycle jacket by gluing them on so this seemed like the most logical idea. As crazy as this looks I'm actually really excited to wear it out. I feel like a mix of motorcycle riding scum bag and Lil' Kim. Can't lose with that combo.

And while we're on the subject of Halloween... What is everyone being? The last two years I had my costumes planned at the beginning of the damn summer. How the hell did October come so fast this year? Any suggestions on what I should be? Right now the only idea I have is covering myself in tattoos, wearing a horse mask, and calling myself Trace Cyrus. Ay yie yie!

Holy smokes! It's been far too long. As per usual, I have no good reason for my absence from blogging. So, instead of boring you with fake excuses I'll get right to it. I got a nice treat in the mail after work today. My order from Blood is the New Black! I was extra excited to get this package, not only because of the amazing Brian Lictenberg collaboration t-shirt (front and center) I ordered, but because they also offer a super cool deal. Finallllllyyyyyyyy, I'm sharing the few photos I have from (pre) Gaga. The 8 hour road trip down to Minneapolis went surprisingly quick especially considering the fact that we left at 4 in the morning. Once we got there we did a ton of shopping (Mall of America!) and restaurant hopping. We had a little confusion with our hotel but we ended up being upgraded to a 4.5 star hotel so that was a little treat! The show wasn't until the last night of our 3 night trip so we had a little time to relax.

I don't even know where to began. Started getting ready the afternoon of the show. Had a few drinks and managed to break a wine glass in the process. Got lost on the way to the show but made it there about half an hour before doors. I was told to go super early but we basically just walked up to the doors, there was hardly organization with lines. We managed to get right at the stage, only 2 or 3 people in front of us.

YOU. GUYS. It blew my mind. I knew exactly what songs she was going to do, what the sets were going to look like, what the interludes would be like. Everything. But it still completely blew me away. It wasn't even that long ago I saw her for the first time, but the tour has completely changed. I'm so glad I've been lucky enough to experience both versions of the tour because they were both amazing for different reasons. I hate to admit it but I kind of forgot how much I love this women. As cheesy as it sounds it was so liberating and I ate every little word she fed me. Now that I'm home I can't stop listening to her. Any of you who have been lucky enough to see the Monster Ball know how incredible it is! And for those of you who don't, GO. Travel! Fly! Walk! I don't care! You need to see this tour!!

The hair on both her dress and my jacket were altered by me. I bought wigs and cut the tracks of hair out then hand sewed them on. We liked the idea of doing outfits inspired by the essence of Gaga but not wearing costumes or outfits she's worn. Sort of inspired by, but not blatant rip off, if that makes sense.

Sorry, the hair looks a little ratty here. I didn't think to take a shot of the jacket before the show, so I just took this one now. The hair was a lot less tangled before the concert.

We also got an extra special treat at our show. Gaga did a song she's never performed before. Holy shit it sounded incredible. Everytime I watch this video it gets stuck in my head.

PARTY POST! LETS GO NUTS

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I am lucky enough to see Lady Gaga once again! My high from the concert last year is dwindling. Just when I thought my summer was going to end in a pretty anti-climatic way my friend Katina suggested doing a road trip to see her. The thought didn't even cross my mind earlier this year when I heard she was playing only 8 hours away by driving. As the summer went on the idea started to solidity. It's kind of been a crazy last minute trip but we've managed to get a good group willing to go down for shopping (Mall of America!) and Katina and I found 2 general admission floor tickets for a reasonable price. Hotel is booked, car is ready, plans are made. Now, the only thing left is..... OUTFIT!!! Katina and I have been frequenting the local dance outfitters and stripper shoe shops to find the perfect pieces. I'm not going to give anything away but so far it looks like we'll be able to pull some Gaga-worthy outfits. It's hard to keep the delicate balance of creating outfits that are inspired by her and not replicas of anything she's done before. We've gotta keep it fresh, you know?! I almost diiiiiedddddd. I usually have good luck thrifting but this was just unreal! People underestimate second hand shopping but with a little luck and patience you can find some real treasures.

After turning twenty, I figured I had to commemorate my journey into manhood with something. What's the ultimate symbol of wisdom, sophistication, and class? Gray hair! I had my amazing hairdresser Chelsea shake a little salt into the front of my bangs and I couldn't be happier! That's what I love about having short hair. You can do stupid and crazy things and not really worry about it. I figure you only live once. Might as well have fun with my hair!

My Super Sweet 20th

So last week my youth officially ended. I turned 20. I celebrated the occasion with an unbelievable party put on by the hottest DJs on the block, Mami Flaca Flame and Relic Hunter aka Chelsea and Freya aka Partie & Pachoulli. A local band called The Paps performed and blew my mind. I'm pretty sure they made my brain explode. Literally. I was smiling ear to ear the entire night and I'm pretty sure the photos make me look like a grinning buffoon but I'm alright with that! I thought I should dress up a bit for the occasion and I don't think anything would feel more right than Jeremy Scott did. Here are a few of the photos shot by my pal Jane. I would've brought my camera but I didn't really trust myself to operate such an expensive piece of machinery on a night like that.

The Uniter is a student run newspaper from the University of Winnipeg. It's a free newspaper with student written articles, but I usually pick it up for the Street Fashion section. They've featured a ton of good looking Winnipegers and great friends so it's always worth picking up, if only for the fashion. I was waiting patently for my turn, and guess what... I got it! Shot by local photographer Brittany Hildebrandt. Some of you loyal blog readers might remember her from forever ago when she did my grad photos or our field photoshoot. OKAY. This has been an insane couple of weeks. I think my body officially hates me after all the alcohol I've put into it lately. First off I had 5 days of binge drinking at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Then I had my 20th birthday party. And after all that I went to my best friend's cabin for even more drinking over the weekend. But the good news is I'm still alive and have a ton of stuff to share with you guys! For now I'll share a few photos from a party a few weeks ago. Some friends of mine put an all club rap night on called Grippin Grain and it's always IN-FUCKING-SANE. Beer was sprayed, clothes came off. Jeez! Too good. Here are a few shots from the night.

I'm not sure what I expected and I obviously know they're not very realistic for every day wear, but with a little convincing I think they might have a fun thing to have around. Classic example of how hair and makeup can make or break a show. I'm not familiar with Alexis Mabille, but I quickly flipped through these photos and disregarded them because of the hair and makeup. After a second look, I realized how much of the collection I really loved. The sandals, the one pieces, the suits. Such a great collection. Too bad all the models looked like fairies.

Anyways, those were just a few of my favorites. The skirts at Givenchy too, but that goes without saying. And to finish it all off, why not share my new favorite bag? Picked it up at a thrift store yesterday and I'm in love!

DIY: Shiny Toed Shoes

These shoes are one of my new favorites! I bought them recently but thought the all black was just a little too boring for me. While considering what to do with them I toyed with the idea of doing the googly eye shoes from The Dandy Project but they were almost too crazy for me. I decided on just a simple silver toe. I know it's pretty self explanatory how I made them, but I included a step by step guide for anyone that's interested.

Choose a pair of shoes with a simple flat front. I picked these up at a second hand shop. Also, I didn't really notice the scuff marks on the shoe until I started spraying the paint. I'd advise either using new shoes or very gently used ones because the flaws kind of tend to stand out when painted.

Start taping everything you don't want painted. Take your time on this step. If you rush through it you'll regret it later.

Cover the entire shoe with the plastic bag and secure with good, heavy duty tape.

You're ready to paint!!

The paint I chose to use was this rust paint I found in my basement. After a trip to the art store I realized I probably could have picked up something that was a little more metallic but I like using supplies I have. I'm too cheap!

Start spraying but be careful to not spray too much. I found it had quite a "splattered" paint look at the beginning but it would fade as it dried. I suggest doing at least 2 coats. I waited a few hours between each application.

Now you play the waiting game. After about 24 hours the paint still felt a bit gummy. Be patient! It seemed like mine would never fully dry, but after about 36 hours it seemed good.

Time to rip all the tape off! As I said earlier, take the beginning taping slowly. I rushed through it and a bit of the paint went where I didn't want it. As you can see now, the scuff marks are a little noticeable.

Here's where every crafters secret weapon comes in handy. I know it's kind of cheating but I didn't have much choice.

There you have it! They'll definitely get a lot more wear now. I think this will add the perfect pop to my usual all black uniform. I hope some of you try this out. Make sure to let me know if you do!!

Caught this tie on the way out of Goodwill on Saturday while doing the crazy $1 Day with Kylie. So glad I saw it. Total fate. Kylie and I both scored crazy hauls. We hit up 4 different locations and didn't leave a single one empty handed. I'm sure you'll get to see most of the stuff, slowly but surely.

My new favorite necklace. I love collecting little bits and pieces along the road but the Marc by Marc Jacobs tooth was just too good to be true.

Get to Work

Last week I ordered a Lens Adapter for my new camera. I have an old Nikon that didn't work anymore with a 50mm lens that I loved, so I thought I would try the lens out on my new Canon. I asked Kylie out to dinner to test it out and here are a few of the shots she got of me.

I'm excited to shoot more with this lens. I would really like to dig out my tripod and shoot some video with it too. It has such a nice gradual fade while focusing, I think it would look great in film.

And while we're on the topic of Kylie... (it seems like every second post is about her, us bloggers stick together!!) She's been working for ages on an online store. She's one of the craftiest people I know so I was looking forward to seeing what she would come up with and she doesn't disappoint. The perks of being friends with the designer is that I've had a few of the pieces for a while now. I have the fringe scarf in black which is such a staple in my wardrobe, as well as the one shoulder epaulette which you may have seen on my blog before (HERE or HERE)

I'm a sucker for a damn good vintage store and I've got a little treasure to share with you guys. I've been following Brooke Candy (of Bloody Guts fame) ever since the Suburban Burger days (anyone? anyone?) and I was thrilled to hear she was launching her own online boutique with the help of a few others. This girl has got style and I've literally day dreamed while scrolling through her tumblr about living the American dream so stylishly and carelessly as her and her friends do. This may be the closest opportunity I'll get but I'll take it. American Apocalypse is a creative collaboration between some of San Francisco's coolest kids and it's at it's beginning stages of it's launch. It's got a nice mix of affordable luxury pieces (and I mean affordable literally) and hand picked vintage pieces that don't look like they're from your grandma's closet. Went for dinner last night with Kylie of Nice and Shiny and my jaw dropped when she pulled up with this hair!! It's incredible, so 90's cyber goth. This girl has balls when it comes to daring hair styles and she totally kills it. It's my honor and privilege to show it off first (she hasn't even posted it yet!!)

And you've probably noticed already, but I've kind of done an overhaul of my blog. The header is just temporary, though. I tried starting a new one last night and I'm feeling totally uninspired so I'm not going to push it. I was just so sick of the small images and I figured with the arrival of my new camera, no better time than the present to blow them up!

DIY: Pleated Belt Piece

I recently saw this image in an editorial from lord knows where (I've got to start keeping track of these things) and it got the DIY cranks in my head turning. I put this one together this afternoon and it was totally trail and error, but I'm quite happy with how it came out. Smaller than the one in the editorial but I like it like that. I might try to some more now that I've got the steps all worked out. I thought I would try to do a step by step for you guys. I hope it's not too hard to follow, I'm pretty bad at explaining! Comment and let me know if you need any clarification.

What you'll need: Material, scissors, iron, sewing machine

I chose to use the selvage edge for the bottom hem, just to reduce bulk by not having to fold under the bottom edge.

When cutting out your piece there are a few things to consider. Make sure you're cutting your fabric width wise at least double the size you want your finished product to be. I wasn't too particular with the size I wanted to I just followed the lines of the plaid in a size that looked appropriate. Also consider how long you will be making it, as you'll be folding under the top to make a belt loop in a later step.

Turn over both left and right sides of your piece and press, hiding the raw edges.

Make your first fold. I just guesstimated how large I wanted my pleats. (total trial and error but it worked) If you like to be accurate I'd encourage measuring but if you trust your eye, go with that! Press.

Continue your folds. Make sure you're making them consistent in size. The sizes of the pleats is totally personal preference but just make sure they're the same throughout. Make sure you're pressing very well at ever fold.

Continue until you've reached the end of your fabric piece. Give it a hard press on both sides now. Pin down at the top as you will be sewing in the next step.

Sew from the raw edge at the top about 1/3 of the way down. Depending how long your pleats are this will vary. Just make sure you sew far enough that when you fold your fabric over to create the belt loop, the entire thing will be sewed down and laying flat. Sew each pleat as close to the fold as possible.

Fold over top to back, leaving enough room for a belt to pass through when completed. You can either do a blind stitch if you prefer to not see the stitching from the right side. You can also just run it through the machine as I did. I figure a machine stitch will hold up longer after wear than a hand stitch would. Again, total personal preference.

Here it is after sewing! My stitch is a little sloppy but you get the idea!

There you have it! Your very own... pleated belt piece? I don't even know what to call this thing! I hope some of you are interested enough to try this for yourselves! It's super simple and only took me about 40 minutes to do. If anyone does try it I'd love to see it!

I'll apologize now for my unexcused absence from my blog. I've been doing God knows what for God knows how long but the moral of the story is I'm back!! I've got some great stuff to share with you lovely, patient folks so soon. I finally got myself a new camera (Canon Rebel T1i) so I'll be shooting some HD dancing videos and snapping outfit shots as often as possible. I've also had some great hangouts and thrift finds, including the above skort, that I can't wait to share. Plus, I've got a DIY or two up my sleeve. I just need to round up a few more supplies and we'll be cookin'!

I thought I would do a quick run through of some of the acts I saw during the festival. The downside of such an amazing festival is you miss some acts do catch others which is a shame but that's just how it works. I keep telling myself that that's more of a reason to go to Lollapalooza.

Caught this show from backstage. Beth Ditto is such an insanely cool girl. She was killing it in Jeremy Scott too.
Phoenix - Long Distance Call
There were about a million and one people at this show. Wouldn't mind seeing them in a closed venue but the french accent banter between songs was very endearing.
Hot Chip - I Feel Better
I've always wanted to see Hot Chip and it kind of pains me to say I don't remember a ton of their set. I do however remember sipping a delicious Heineken during their set. Whoops.
Vampire Weekend - Diplomat's Son
I could only barely see/hear Vampire Weekend's set from outside of the festival grounds while we were trying to meet our friend with our tickets. Disappointing but all the more reason to go to Lollapalooza to see them there!
Fever Ray - Triangle Walks
As expected, such an insane show. Her voice is incredible and it's the last set we caught on Friday night. Listening now kind of sends shivers down my spine. Missed Jay Z for her but would do it again in a heartbeat.
Miike Snow - Silvia
I wasn't a huge fan of this group before Coachella, but that's what music festivals are all about. Discovering new music. I'll figure get into them more now.

That's only the tip of the iceberg of who I saw but I thought I'd do a quick run through of my favorites. Die Antwoord totally made the festival for me!

Seeing Red

Took full advantage of my day off today and took on a little DIY project. I've owned these red jeans for a while stopped wearing them so I was thinking of ways I could transform them. I came up with the idea of dip dyeing them. This was my first attempt at anything like this. It actually looks really good up close, it fades nicely, but I'm not the biggest fan of how it just starts into black so bluntly. Couldn't figure out a way to make it transition a little nicer. Also, when I'm wearing them I feel like I'm wearing riding boots. Regardless, I do really like them!

Oh, and I'm taking my camera in tomorrow so hopefully that will be the end of these shitty pictures streak. I've also been looking into getting a Canon Rebel T1i so I can record my stupid videos in HD. Nothing like dancing around in 1080p!

Okay. I've been really, really bad. It's been far too long since I last blogged. My broken SLR has really been getting me down. I apologize for the poor photo quality but it's out of my control right now. Anywho, here's my latest outfit. I've wanted to wear man leggings (I put the 'man' in there to make myself feel better about it) for a while now so I picked some up at Value Village and went for it. They're surprisingly comfortable and a great piece for the transitioning seasons.

All About the Brows

Everyone is always looking for the next thing to decorate or throw an accessory on, and I think bloggers have found it. For years the eyebrows have been ignored but recently people are starting to appreciate their potential. Here's my sloppy take on the trend and some other bloggers that have done a much nicer job!

It seems so weird to call eyebrows a trend but it's a fun and easy way to go over the top for a party. Gotta give props to Pelayo though, bleaching is really extreme but it looks amazing on him (homeboy can rock a kilt like no other). Maybe when I finally bleach my hair I'll bleach my eyebrows for a while first.

As an avid DIYer it pains me to know I skipped out of a project I am very capable of completing on my own but I had to make an exception recently. Normally I don't mind horribly tedious and repetitive activities so a shredded t-shirt was up on my to do list but I didn't get to it in time. I came across a seller on Etsy with very reasonable prices so I went against my better judgment and just ordered one. Turns out DIYing is a lot easier when all you do is send money through your paypal from the comfort of your computer chair, wait 2 weeks, and get a package in the mail. Maybe I'll start doing this more often!!

My week has been so busy! Filled with getting way too drunk, making a fool of myself and losing one of my favorite jackets. Also filled with not ideal work shifts and no time to do things that need to be done. For example, homework, cleaning my room, and most importantly, BLOGGING! I think I'm taking my camera to be fixed on Friday so until then here is a little ~behind the scenes~ from our shoot last weekend (by that I mean stupid photobooth photos we took)

And here are some photos of the leather pants I bought at the thrift store the other day and sewed tighter. They're pretty damn tight though, but whatever! I like them :)

I'm probably going to see if I can get it to work with a new memory card. Hopefully that works because otherwise I'm screewwweedddd. I can't afford a new camera!

Anyways, here is the best way I could showcase my latest DIY. I came across a dance outfit for $4 at a thrift store and knew I needed to do something with it. It was essentially a velvet bodysuit with a long tassel skirt. So this afternoon I seam ripped the tassels off and stuck them on the sleeves of a hoodie I picked up for $15. Not too bad for under $20, I'd say! It only took me about an hour in total, too. Such a quick and cheap DIY. I LOVE IT!

I've been wanting to try out this look ever since the Alexander Wang Fall 2009 show. (It's alright to be inspired by a womanswear show when it's clearly got menswear influences, right??) The hunt was on for the perfect wide brimmed hat and I think I may have found it! Came across this hat thrifting the other day but it had a slight cowboy hat curve to it, so I've been working on flattening it out. I'm aware I look completely Amish and I'm willing to get over that. I'm into it. Amish-chic, we'll call it. It's the latest craze!!

Here comes the typical "sorry I haven't blogged in so long" speech. SORRY I HAVEN'T BLOGGED IN SO LONG!!! I actually didn't realize how long it was until tonight. Jeez. I could say I was really busy but that would be a lie. I've been moderately busy but in some what of a slum. I think it has to do with the fact that my room is so messy and it's getting to the end of winter. I'm just ready for some spring cleaning and some spring weather. Something to revive my inspiration pulse because fashion week hasn't really but cutting it for me yet. Can't wait for the Jeremy Scott show tomorrow, though!!

I Need Something I Can Dance To

Last night was WILLLDDDDDDDD. There was a insane warehouse party in a building downtown and it seemed like every person I knew was there. Couldn't turn a corner without seeing a familiar face which is always nice. Shared some drinks, some kisses, some dances. Party got broken up at about 3:30 by the cops which in my case was probably a good thing, otherwise I probably would have ended up spending the entire night out.
And to keep in tune with my last post, on the road to high bun glory I'm entering a zone of unfortunate emo looking bangs. It's not so bad yet but I'm trying out a few different things. Last night I sported a french braided hair crown of sorts. I'm really into this look and it's also nice to have my hair out of my way while I dance (though I do love throwing out a good hair flip once in a while :P)

As some of you may know, I've got quite the hair time line laid out for myself. Included in said time line is bleaching my hair for the second time. I experimented with this last summer with box die and my hair turned out piss yellow. It wasn't so bad but it didn't quite itch my scratch. Next time I do it I'm getting it professionally done and killing my hair until it's white. And I figured this time around if I'm going to kill my hair, I'm going to kill it right! What would that entail? Dying it a ton of different colors to suit my mood, obviously! What the hell, right? I put together this collage/inspiration board of colored hair looks I loved. Kind of funny how many times Cole Mohr has sported the rainbow hair. And no collage on my blog is complete without Gagaz.

Any of you guys experimented with dying your hair with Kool Aid? It seems like that would be the most reasonable/cost efficient method for what I want. Especially considering the fact that I'll want most colors to be as temporary as possible.

I also figured this could a sort of on-going feature on my blog. I have a few other hair looks I'm dying to try out so I think I'll share them with ya'll along the way.

Has anyone else been following the mysterious videos of iamamiwhoami?? There is so much speculation about these damn videos. Personally, I can't get enough of it. So here's the lowdown. Nobody knows who these viral videos are for and there are theories about them being to promote an artists new album. The most prevalent guesses are Gaga (I don't believe it), Goldfrapp (don't believe it either) and most of all Christina Aguilera. I was really into the idea of it being Xtina when I first saw them but quickly wrote them off. Too extreme for her image. But as more and more clues are released I'm starting to believe it. Take a look for yourself:

Clue 2: If you add up all of the numbers before a decimal and attach a letter to its corresponding number (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.) you’ll notice that each video has a distinct message:

Prelude 699130082.451322 = (38.17) = (CH.AG) = CH. AG.
9.1.13.669321018 = I. A. M. CH.
9.20.19.13.5.723378 = I.T.S.M.E.C.
